Akshaya Tritiya: Know date, auspicious time and importance of donation

There are some dates in Hinduism, whose importance has remained unbroken for centuries. One of these is Akshaya Tritiya – a festival which is always considered fruitful, the provider of all success and the source of virtue that never diminishes. ‘Akshaya’ means that which does not diminish, which remains forever. This is the reason that every work done on this day – be it chanting, penance, donation or service; gives infinite times more fruit.

Importance of Akshaya Tritiya

According to the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. It is also known as Akti Teej, Akha Teej and Parashuram Jayanti. This date is not only considered to be an auspicious time, but many mythological events and divine stories are associated with it.

This day is also celebrated as the birthday of Parashurama ji, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Also, on this date, pleased with the penance of King Bhagiratha, Mother Ganga descended on earth. It is said that on this day Kubera worshiped Lord Shiva and got the boon of becoming the god of wealth and the Pandavas also got Akshaya Patra on this day, with which they could cook unlimited food once every day. Not only this, Lord Krishna also ended the poverty of his friend Sudama on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.

When is Akshaya Tritiya 2025?

According to the Panchang, the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month will start on April 29, 2025 at 05:31 pm and will last till April 30, 2025 at 02:12 pm. Based on the Udaya Tithi, the festival of Akshaya Tritiya will be celebrated on April 30, 2025.

Abujh Muhurat

Another specialty of this date is that any auspicious work – like marriage, housewarming, starting a business, Bhoomi Pujan, buying jewellery etc.; can be done without any Muhurat. This is called Abujh Sawa, that is, for which there is no need to take out a special time. Buying gold and silver on this day is also considered very auspicious because it is considered a symbol of prosperity and increase of Lakshmi.

Importance of donation and virtue on Akshaya Tritiya

It is mentioned in the scriptures—

“Akshaya Tritiyaaam Daanam, Punyam Cha Na Kshiyate.”

(“अक्षय तृतीयायां दानं, पुण्यं च न क्षीयते।”)

That is, the donation and virtue done on Akshaya Tritiya never ends.

On this day, special importance has been given to donating water, food, clothes, cow, gold, land and especially food. On this day, feeding the poor, helpless and disabled is considered very virtuous. It not only destroys the sins of the donor, but also sows the seeds of virtue in the chain of karmas which remains everlasting for birth after birth.

Why donate food?

Food is called Parabrahma in Hinduism; because it is the only thing that keeps life going. Annadanam Param Daanam — that is, food donation is considered the best of all donations. Feeding a hungry person on the day of Akshaya Tritiya not only satisfies the body but also provides satisfaction and peace to the soul.
